Frequently asked questions about Motor TPL insurance
MTPL insurance is a motor third party liability insurance. This insurance covers damage to a car, property or person in a traffic accident caused by the driver responsible for the accident with the insured car. Almost all damages are indemnified, except when the Law on Insurance provides for otherwise.
Motor third-party liability insurance is often referred to as “car insurance” or “auto liability insurance”; however, special purpose vehicle insurance is another service about which you can find more about here.
A regular compulsory motor third party liability insurance contract is taken out for one year. You can find out the validity of your car insurance by contacting your ERGO consultant or visiting www.mano.ergo.lt.
The price of car insurance varies based on your car’s age, power, and several other factors. Additionally, rates differ for new drivers, those without experience, and experienced drivers. The most affordable options are for disciplined drivers. For an exact price, please reach out to an ERGO consultant at our offices, calling by telephone 1887 or visiting www.online.ergo.lt.
The owner of the vehicle is responsible for conclusion of a compulsory MTPL insurance contract. If the vehicle is used by a person who uses it under a leasing or hire purchase contract, this person is responsible for taking out the insurance.
If you have not handed over the insurance documents to the new owner, you can request the insurance company to cancel the contract, in which case the unused balance of the insurance premium will be refunded. If you have handed over the insurance documents to the new owner, it is up to the new owner to apply. The transfer of the insurance documents can be noted in the contract of sale of the car.
You have to cancel your car insurance and take out a new insurance contract for the other car. For more information, please contact an ERGO consultant at the sales offices or call by telephone 1887.
The first step is to take all possible measures to minimise potential damage. If required by law, report the accident to the police. If the parties involved in the accident agree on the circumstances of the accident, an accident declaration should be completed. You can fill in the accident declaration form at www.draudimoivykiai.lt. The person responsible for the accident must notify the company that insured his/her car within 3 days.
We do not insure cars for a day or a week. The shortest available car insurance is for one month.
You can complete your declaration at www.draudimoivykiai.lt.
The compulsory motor third-party liability insurance is valid throughout the Republic of Lithuania and abroad, i.e. in the European Union and Switzerland. If you have a green card with compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, the insurance is valid in all the countries on the green card (except for Russia and Belarus).
If the years of driving experience detailed in the contract change, it’s viewed as a change in risk. You’ll need to get in touch with your insurance provider to amend your contract.
You should contact the representative of the insurance company of the responsible party in Lithuania. If the insurance company of the responsible party does not have a representative, you can contact your own insurance company.
If it’s clear who caused the accident and you need a replacement car, you should contact the insurance company of the responsible party to arrange it.
Compulsory motor third party liability insurance is required for the car to pass the roadworthiness test. If your car is in a state of disrepair and you are involved in an accident, the insurance company will seek for compensation for the damages.

The data of the vehicle owner and the vehicle’s technical data, including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN code), are required to conclude the contract.
You cannot insure a car in the name of another person and make an insurance contract, unless you are an authorised person.
